The NAACP has been contacted and has indicated that it wants to show support in bringing attention to these concerns. Media outlets are also being contacted regarding the event.

This action comes after serious concerns involving the treatment of employees at the Williamstown Post Office. Based on information reviewed by the union, we believe there is substantial evidence showing unequal treatment involving employees of different races. One concern involves attendance and tardiness records. The union has reviewed records showing white employees with attendance records that, in our view, are significantly worse than those being used in an effort to remove a young African-American female employee, yet those white employees did not face the same disciplinary action.

Another case involves a young African-American female employee who has been accused of threatening to punch a supervisor in the face. The same supervisor previously made a similar accusation against another young African-American female employee. In that earlier case, the union successfully fought to have the employee reinstated with back pay. In the current case, a witness disputes the supervisor’s accusation and supports the account of our member.

One statement written to Congressman Norcross captures why this issue cannot be ignored: “You don’t know what it is like to come to work with a target on your back because of something you cannot change.”

No employee should believe their job is in jeopardy because of race, sex, or any other personal characteristic. These concerns must be brought into the open and addressed. There are also concerns regarding the Postmaster’s management style and what has been described as a history of perceived bullying. While no direct evidence has been presented that the Postmaster’s actions are racially motivated, the concern is that allowing bullying or dishonesty to continue can create an environment where improper treatment of employees is allowed to go unchecked.

As part of the protest, participants plan to enter the Post Office in a continuous line to purchase one-cent stamps, which may require purchasing sheets of 20 for 20 cents. Anyone participating in this portion of the action is expected to remain orderly and professional. The intent is to extend the line without disrupting postal operations in any other manner. We are asking members to spread the word. Tell your coworkers. Bring your family. Invite others who believe employees deserve to be treated fairly and with dignity. Fifty signs have been custom made for this event, and we need people willing to stand together and make our concerns visible. If we want unfair treatment to stop, we have to be willing to stand together and call attention to it.
